Author Biographies

Richard Elliott, University of Newcastle

Richard Elliott is Senior Lecturer in Music at Newcastle University (UK). His research explores the intersections of popular music, media and cultural studies. He is the author of the books Fado and the Place of Longing (2010), Nina Simone (2013), The Late Voice (2015), The Sound of Nonsense (2018) and DJs do Guetto (2022), as well as articles and chapters on pop music, literature, persona, memory, nostalgia, place and space, affect, language and technology. His current research focuses on global popular musics and the materiality of song.

Abigail Gardner, University of Gloucestershire

Abigail Gardner is Professor of Cultural Studies at University of Gloucestershire (UK). Her research lies at the interface of popular music, sound, ageing and feminist media studies. She is the author of the books PJHarvey and Music Video Performance (2015), Aging and Contemporary Female Musicians (2020), Listening, Belonging, and Memory (2023) and, with Ros Jennings, Rock On: Women, Popular Music and Ageing (2012) and Ageing and Popular Music in Europe (2020). She has written on pop music, memory and music/migration. Her current funded research is on natural sound, ageing and care homes.
