Dr Hillegonda Rietveld is Reader at London South Bank University, where she manages BA Music and Sonic Media, which she established in 2003, and coordinates PG research programme of Centre for Media and Culture Research (CMCR). Her research publications address the development, creative practices and experience of electronic dance music cultures. In addition to her work for IASPM@Journal, she is member of the Advisory Board for Dancecult, Journal for Electronic Dance Music Culture. She has been professionally engaged in music culture since 1982, when she became involved with influential Manchester club the Haçienda, FAC51, and released her first electronic recording as part of Quando Quango, for (now defunct) UK indie label Factory Records. A selection of recordings are currently re-released on several compilations.
